چکیده

We present new observations on PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETG), using the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We confirm the detection of an absorption line plausibly identified as O VIII Lyα from the warm-hot intergalactic medium associated with a small group of galaxies along the line of sight, as originally reported by Fang et al. 2002 (here after FANG02). Combining the previous observations in FANG02 and five new, long observations on the same target, we increase the total exposure time by a factor of three, and the total counts per resolution element by a factor of five. The measured line equivalent width is smaller than that observed in FANG02, but still consistent at 90% confidence. We also analyze the XMM-Newton observations on the same target, as well as observations using the Chandra LETG and the High Resolution Camera (HRC) combination. These observations have been used to challenge our reported detection. While no line is seen in either the XMM-Newton and the Chandra LETG+HRC data, we find that our result is consistent with the upper limits from both data sets. We attribute the non-detection to (1) higher quality of the Chandra LETG+ACIS spectrum, and (2) the rather extended wings of the line spread functions of both the XMM RGS and the Chandra LETG+HRC. We discuss the implication of our observation on the temperature and density of the absorber. We also confirm the detection of z ∼ 0 O VII absorption and, comparing with previous Chandra analysis, we obtain much tighter constraints on the line properties. Lyα Absorption from an Overdense Region in the Intergalactic Medium

We report the first detection of an O VIII Lyα absorption line associated with an overdense region in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along the sightline towards PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). The absorption line is detected at 4.5σ level with cz ≈ 16, 600 km s. At the same velocity Shull et al. (1998) detected a small group of spiral galaxies...

RXTE Observations of PKS 2155-304 during the November 1997 Gamma-Ray Outburst

We present x-ray observations of the nearby BL Lac PKS 2155-304 taken when it was undergoing a GeV/TeV gamma-ray outburst. During the outburst we measured xray fluxes in the 2-10 keV band that are the largest ever observed for PKS 2155-304. Comparison of these November 1997 measurements and other x-ray observations made contemporaneously with GeV or TeV gamma-ray observations indicate that x-ra...

X–ray Igm in the Local Group

Recent observations with the dispersive X-ray spectrometers aboard Chandra and Newton Observatory have begun to probe the properties of the X-ray intergalactic medium (IGM) at small redshifts. Using large quantities (∼950 ksec) of spectroscopic data acquired using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) aboard Newton Observatory, we investigated the intervening material toward three low redsh...

We present optical light curves for the period 1996-2000, of two of the brightest known EGRET BL Lac objects: PKS 2005-489 and PKS 2155-304, the latter also one of the few known TeV sources. For both objects, quiescent epochs of low level of variability were followed by active periods, without any indication of periodicity. In PKS 2005-489, several variability events with duration of about 20 d...

Multiwavelength Observations of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155 – 304 with XMM - Newton

The optical-UV and X-ray instruments on-board XMM-Newton provide an excellent opportunity to perform simultaneous observations of violently variable objects over a broad wavelength range. The UV and X-ray bright BL Lac object PKS 2155–304 has been repeatedly observed with XMM-Newton about twice per year. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the simultaneous multi-wavelength variabil...
